Tesla Updates Model 3

Tesla has unveiled the long rumored refresh to the Model 3, the first major redesign since the model was launched in 2017. The new design, mentioned by many outlets as “Project Highland” features new front and rear fascias, a revised interior with new features and design, and upgraded range estimates for models overseas. Some of the changes were expected; the Model 3 has remained close to its original design for six years now, most cars would have a complete redesign by now.

However, Tesla has added a few surprises to this update as well. Beyond the exterior styling changes, subtle changes like the rear Tesla logo being replaced by the name spelled out have also been added. The range has increased across all models: based on WLTP numbers, there’s been a 11-12% improvement, which is likely to carry over to the US model as well. Expect EPA estimates to be near 300 miles for the base model and 370 for the long range model. Interestingly, Tesla says this increased range largely comes from improvements in aerodynamics. With a new drag coefficient measured at .219, it’s Tesla’s lowest yet (from .225 on the current Model 3.)

Bigger changes are apparent inside. There’s a new rear display, redesigned cushions, and perforated seats for rear occupants. Up front, Tesla has made the decision to remove the stalks for gear selection and turn signals like it did for the S and X. We’ll see if this change is accepted by customers, as the feedback previously was not all that positive. They’ve also added higher end features like ventilated seats, ambient lighting, and more sound insulation in the body and increased acoustic glass use. In addition, the sound system gains three speakers for a total of 17.
